EDITOR’S NOTE: Five area businesses are vying for a share of $ 35,000 in business funding under the Erick Laine Business Accelerator, an incubator created to spur business growth in greater Olean County and by Cattaraugus. The finalists will participate in a final business showcase that will take place on December 7 at the Olean Campus of Jamestown Community College.

A chance encounter – and almost instantaneous synergy – sparked the genesis of Date’d Nutrition, an entrepreneurial food startup company specializing in raw and organic products that capitalizes on the founders’ love for healthy foods.

“When I first met Jason (Wright) I was like – and to him – ‘What are you doing here? You can do so much more with the talents you have, ”said Sarah Hegedus, Wright partner and company co-founder. “He was working as a personal trainer and I just saw huge potential in what we could do together. I told him we should work together.

But to do what? That answer came easily, Wright said.

“We decided to solve our own problem, which is to find sustainable, raw and organic food,” he said. “We noticed that there was a lack of this in the area.”

So Hegedus, armed with the germ of an idea, spent the next two months exhaustively researching what it meant to produce raw, organic food.

“I literally looked everywhere I could to find out what the FDA and state guidelines were saying about what we wanted to do,” she said. “If we were to do this, it was going to be well documented beforehand. “

Ultimately, the two developed three main products: nutritional bars (eight flavors, plus seasonal blends); Cinnamon brioches; and dates completed. None of their products contain added sugar; all of the sugars present occur naturally in the ingredients. Coming soon is a line of date based spreads. Their snack and dessert products are sold today in coffee shops, public markets, and organic grocery stores in Pennsylvania and western New York.

“In our context, ‘raw’ means in its most natural form,” Wright explained. “We spent a lot of time researching our sources to make sure we were purchasing the best ingredients and those that met our own personal and business standards. “

In addition to doing extensive research on these many aspects of their start-up business, Hegedus and Wright brainstormed on behalf of their original idea.

“We decided on ‘Date’d’,” Hegedus said. “We liked it because it gives us some leeway to flirt with our brand image. There are a lot of puns that we can use in our marketing, especially on social media … for example, to introduce our products to people, we can ask, “what about that first date?” This opens up many creative possibilities.

Wright and Hegedus have moved their business from Pennsylvania to Olean and will soon be housed in the kitchen space on the Cattaraugus County campus of Jamestown Community College.

“It gives us the resources we need to start growing,” Wright said. “We are growing our business quickly and this location will help us a lot. “

The two also credited their experiences with the Laine Business Accelerator for accelerating their learning curve.
